International Year of Forests - 2011
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. It recognises that "forests and sustainable forest management can contribute significantly to sustainable development, poverty eradication and the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals".
There will be events and activities throughout the year and across the globe that will highlight the International Year of Forests. The theme for the year is “Forests for People”. It hopes to highlight the dynamic relationship between forests and the people who depend on them.
One of the biggest events during 2011 is the Forest Stewardship Council's 6th FSC General Assembly in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, from 26 June to 01 July. The FSC General Assembly meets every 3 years and is fortunate to have a meeting scheduled during the International Year of Forests. The members of the social, environmental and economic chambers of FSC come together to discuss solutions for the future for the world’s forests and the people who depend on them.
